The Fraglia Vela Malcesine hosted the third event of the Italian J/70 Cup on Lake Garda in July. The 36-boat fleet was treated to two great days of sailing and seven races. Rich Witzel’s ROWDY team from Chicago USA (Joachim Aschenbrenner, Max Salminen & Tomas Dietrich) posted three seconds in their seven-race, single discard scoreline to win with 18 points net. The Swedish team on INTERMEZZO—Jonas Kjellberg’s crew of Tomislav, Johannes Lind-Widestam & Stefano Ciampalini—won their final race to cement a solid grasp of second place. Rounding out the podium was Michel Grau’s German PAINT IT BLACK team overcoming a first-race BFD. Grau’s crew of Florian Thoelen, Sam de los Reyes, Willem van Waay & Goncalo Ribiero posted two bullets in their tally to snag third with 30 points net. The balance of the top five included the top two Italian teams: Luca Domenici’s NOTARO TEAM in fourth and Gianfranco Noe’s WHITE HAWK team in fifth. In addition to taking fifth place in the Open division, Noe’s WHITE HAWK crew easily won the Corinthian Division. The crew included Matija Succi, Sara Zuppin, Giuliano Chiandussi and Alexander Gabriel-Harey. Second went to top woman helm Sofia Giondi and her Italian team on WANDERLUST of Filippo Baldassari, Luca Tubaro and Matteo Morelina. Completing that podium was the British crew on CALYPSO. They too were led by a female helm: Ali Hall and her team of Jon Calascione, Benno Marstaller and Hannah Peters.
