Barcelona, November 18, 2024 — The Barcelona Winter Series kicked off this weekend in the waters of the Catalan
capital with the first leg of the competition, which brought together 25 J70 class boats. Despite challenging weather
conditions, the event lived up to expectations, delivering thrilling battles on the water and establishing ‘Tenaz’ as the
provisional leading team.
Organized by the Reial Club Nàutic de Barcelona, this first leg was marked by the efficient management of the Race
Committee, led by Pere Sarquella, who adapted to shifting wind conditions to ensure six races were held over the three
days of competition.
‘Tenaz’ Leads from Day One
The ‘Tenaz’ team from RCN Barcelona, led by Pablo Garriga, showed strong dominance from the very first day. On
Friday, with a light southerly breeze ranging from 4 to 6 knots, the team won both races, excelling in tactical
consistency and speed. Close behind were the local team ‘Hang Ten,’ the reigning champion, and the Danish debutant
‘Lady in Red,’ who made an impressive debut in the competition.
A Competitive Saturday
Saturday brought much more favorable conditions, with steady winds that allowed all four scheduled races to be
completed. ‘Hang Ten,’ helmed by Jorge Martínez Doreste, shone with two race victories and dropped their worst
result after the required minimum of six races was completed, allowing one discard in the standings. However, ‘Tenaz’
retained the overall lead thanks to their consistent top finishes.
Meanwhile, ‘Lady in Red,’ skippered by Sten Mohr in their first appearance in Barcelona, continued to deliver solid
performances, securing third place provisionally after the first two days of racing.
Windless Sunday and Prize Ceremony
On Sunday, weather conditions did not permit any racing. After a postponement on the water and more than two hours
of waiting, the Race Committee decided to cancel the day’s races, finalizing the results achieved through Saturday. The
prize-giving ceremony held at the Reial Club Nàutic de Barcelona wrapped up this successful first leg, with the fleet
already looking forward to the next event in December.
During the prize ceremony, Ricardo Terrades, representative of the Mediterranean J70 Spanish fleet and member of the
RCNB Sports Commission, expressed his gratitude:
“We are very pleased to have had so many boats, with 27 registered and 25 competing in this first leg. We have never
had such a large fleet, and we look forward to seeing everyone again in December.”
