The 2024 J/70 South American Championship in Punta del Este, Uruguay took place from November 15-22. The Yacht Club Punta del Este brought together 30 crews from Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay to compete on an unusually windy racecourse. Over 11 intense races, sailors were challenged by consistently breezy conditions, with winds exceeding 10 knots in every race and reaching 20-25 knots in several. These conditions delighted fans of speed but posed challenges for spinnaker trimmers. Brazilian teams demonstrated remarkable skill and consistency, dominating the leaderboard with four boats in the top positions. Mindset, helmed by Ralph Rosa, claimed the title of South American Champion in the Open category with Guilherme Hamelmann, Julio Carvalho and Goncalo Ribeiro. The team, runners-up at the recent Worlds in Palma, achieved four bullets in the 11 races. Narrowly missing the win were Haroldo Soldberg’s Viking and Samuel Albrecht’s El Enemigo, second and third respectively. In the Corinthian category, the Argentine boat Bbto, sailed by the Arrondo brothers, took the top spot. We are thrilled with the growing popularity of the J/70 Class in South America and look forward to future events, especially the 2025 J/70 World Championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
