After six thrilling races, the Corinthian Yacht Club of Australia entries not only showcased their outstanding skills but also secured the top two positions in the highly competitive 2024 J/70 NSW Championship, hosted by the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. The challenging races, set against a backdrop of a gusty SSE breeze reaching up to 25 knots, provided a true test of the sailors’ prowess and determination in the 18-boat fleet. As the competition unfolded, Tim Ryan’s VAMOS led the pack on the first day with an impressive 10 points, closely followed by Reg Lord’s JUNO holding strong at 13 points. Rob Davis, at the helm of CELESTIAL representing Sandringham Yacht Club, secured the fourth position. In the end, it was Reg Lord’s JUNO team (Paige Caldecott, Max Brennan & Will Sargent from CYCA) who triumphed with three bullets in their last five races to win a tie-breaker over early regatta leader VAMOS. Ryan’s VAMOS team of Jess Grimes, Charlie Gundy & George Richardson (all from CYCA) started strongly but closed with a 4-4-5-2 to lose the tie-breaker at 20 points each on the countback. Rounding out the podium was Chris & Lachlan Dare’s team on AMBITION (Ben Lamb & Murray Jones) sitting 3 points in arrears of the leaders with 23 points total. AMBITION also won two races. Rounding out the top five spots were Rob Davis’s CELESTIAL and David Doherty’s SEQUEL, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.
