The Real Club Náutico de Barcelona hosted the second act of the Barcelona Spring Regattas J/70, a series that continues the Club’s intense sailing calendar following the successful conclusion of the Winter Series. Although the number of entries was slightly lower than the first event, with a fleet of 14 teams, the competitive standard remained exceptionally high. Notably, the three Spanish teams that recently claimed the podium at the J/70 Corinthian European Championship in Cascais were all present in Barcelona. The current European Champions, the HSN Sailing Team, along with HangTen – Hnos. Berga and Bodegas Can Marlés, did not want to miss the Barcelona event, despite some crew changes within their respective line-ups. Despite an uncertain weather forecast with light easterly breezes predicted, the race committee managed to complete five races over three days of competition. Friday’s opening day saw three races held in flat seas and a breeze of 5 to 7 knots. Olympic medalist Joan Cardona (RCN Palma) dominated the first race with his boat Yupi, followed by Noticia helmed by Luis M. Cabiedes and Balearia – Team RCNP skippered by Maria Bover. The second race was won by HSN Sailing Team, marking the start of their dominant performance, with Tenaz and Noticia finishing second and third respectively. In the third and final race of the day, the team from the Canary Islands once again took the top spot, with Javier Padrón at the helm, Luis Martínez Doreste calling tactics, Ricardo Terrades trimming sails and young Chilean Arturo Oyarzún stepping in at the bow. Saturday brought similar light wind conditions but with more residual swell. Two more races were completed. HSN Sailing Team continued their winning streak with two additional victories, bringing their tally to four straight wins. On this day, Santi Más stepped in as tactician. Behind them, Tenaz helmed by Pablo Garriga and Noticia, now reinforced with Alfredo González, completed the podium in both races. Duc in Altum, skippered by Manuel Roca, also made a strong showing, claiming third in the final race of the day with the help of Ángel Blázquez. On Sunday, conditions failed to improve. Despite the patience of the fleet and the race committee, the breeze never filled in. After more than three hours of waiting, racing was abandoned for the day. After two events and a total of 13 races, the provisional overall standings are led by HSN Sailing Team with 20 points, followed by HangTen – Hnos. Berga with 47 points, and Tenaz in third place with 96 points, crewed by Rayco Tabares (tactician), Rubén Castells (trimmer) and Luis Arrarte (bow). With this second act complete, the Barcelona Spring Regatta now looks ahead to its grand finale from May 9 to 11. For Series details, visit www.barcelonawinterseries.com.
