The Sandberg Estates J/70 World Championship has a winner! After five intense days of competition on the Bay of Palma, the American team of Douglas Newhouse and Jeremy Wilmot’s Yonder (with Ted Hackney and George Peet) were proclaimed World Champions of the Class at the event organized by the Real Club Náutico de Palma (RCNP) and the International J/70 Class Association.

A northeasterly wind averaging 10 knots allowed the Race Committee to give a punctual start at 11:30h for the last race of the competition. This race was won by British team Charles Thompson and Tom Mallindine’s Brutus II and followed in second place by Spaniard Luis Albert’s Patakin, with third going to the Brazilian team of Renato Faria’s To Nessa.

Leading since day one of the World Championship, Newhouse and Wilmot’s Yonder from the New York YC, finished in 11th place, sufficient to give the team their event win and to be proclaimed the new J/70 Champions. Moreover, the team finished with an 11-point lead over the second placed team. Consistency and the ability to avoid any major errors proved crucial for success.

“After a great deal of hard work, planning, training, regattas and teamwork, we have achieved our goal of winning the World Championship, which is quite frankly incredible. We had the regatta of our lives, and the team fought extremely hard,” commented Newhouse upon arrival at the RCNP docks.
The second podium position was claimed by the Brazilian team, Ralph Rosa’s Mindset from the IC Río de Janeiro. Third went to the title defenders, British team Brutus II from the Royal Southern YC, who were able to pull back from their fifth place Friday, thanks to their win in the last race of the Worlds.
As well as the intercontinental title, the event also recognized the first placed boats in the Corinthian (non-professional crews), One Pro (only one professional sailor on board), Youth, Women’s and Mixed-Plus divisions, and the first finishing team with a woman at the helm.
