The J/70 Corinthian World Cup kicked off in Riva del Garda on 1 June, the first event in the history of this dynamic one-design open exclusively to non-professional sailors; thanks to the joint organization of J/70 Italian Class, J/70 International Class and Fraglia Vela Riva, the Corinthian World Cup attracted 75 crews representing 20 nations to the starting line. A warm hour, although not tense as typically happens on the Alto Benaco regatta field, allowed the participants to complete three dynamic and very balanced tests, as evidenced by the ranking after the first day. To regulate the games is Calypso Plastic Pledge by Jonathan Calascione who, thanks to the placements scored in the first tests of the series (6-3-3), solidly gains the top of the standings with 12 points. He is followed, with 18 lengths of delay, by Irrational Exhuberance by Tonu Toniste (5-4-21) while White Hawk by Gianfranco Noè, another great protagonist of the opening day, is third. The crew led by the owner Triestino, former Corinthian World Champion in Porto Cervo 2017, put the seal on the first and third round of the series, losing a handful of points during the second race, closed in thirtieth place. In fourth place is Dads ‘N’ Lads by Tim Simpson & Ole Bettum (2-27-13), while from fifth to seventh position we find, on equal points (47 pts.), the Brazilian entry To Nessa, the Dutch of Jello and the Australians of Celestial. Closing the top-ten are Five For Fighting 4.0 (Italy), Lift Ticket (France) and Mr Henri (Netherlands). “We are excited about this start, but the road is still long and the fleet competitive and very fierce so no choice is obvious and every point important.
