An international fleet of J/70s from Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay enjoyed spectacular sailing in this year’s edition of the ROLEX Circuito Atlantico Sur. With racing taking place on the waters off Punta del Este, Uruguay, the Yacht Club Punta del Este ran eight races from January 16-20. For most of the series, the winds howled out of the easterly quadrants in the 15 to 25+ knots range. In the end, the Brazilian team on VIKING—Haroldo Solberg with a crew of Geison Mendes, Mario Trinidade and Gabriel Silva—were in a class by themselves. The team scored all firsts for 7 net points. The balance of the podium proved to be a battle between two teams that hail from the same YC Punta del Este: Santiago Silveira’s SPIRIT OF BAMBOO and Pedro Garra’s PLAN B. Garra’s PLAN B led the two teams for the first two days. However, their standings flip-flopped on the final two days. By closing with a string of seconds, Silveira’s SPIRIT OF BAMBOO team of Federico Caballero, Diego Stefani and Matias Murguia held strong to take the silver with 15 points net. Getting a string of thirds just behind them was Garra’s PLAN B team of Ignacio Regusci, Quique Schickendantz and Nicholas Pardi. The balance of the top five was determined by a three-way tiebreaker at 36 points each. On countback, it was Uruguayan Felix Leborgne’s JUMBO in fourth place, the Argentinean Federico Ferrioli’s CODIGO ROO in fifth, and Argentinean Sergio Pendola’s CACIQUE ending in sixth position.
